![]() These are still often credited as being the cornerstones of Linux game development. Loki developed several free software tools, such as the Loki installer (also known as Loki Setup), and supported the development of the Simple DirectMedia Layer, as well as starting the OpenAL audio library project. Loki, although a commercial failure, is credited with the birth of the modern Linux game industry. On November 9, 1998, a new software firm called Loki Software was founded by Scott Draeker, a former lawyer who became interested in porting games to Linux after being introduced to the system through his work as a software licensing attorney. A website called The Linux Game Tome began to catalog games created for or ported to Linux in 1995. In 1998, two programmers from Origin ported Ultima Online to Linux. Other early commercial Linux games included Hopkins FBI, an adventure game released in 1998 by MP Entertainment, and Inner Worlds in 1996, which was released for and developed on Linux. In 1991 DUX Software contracted Don Hopkins to port SimCity to Unix, which he later ported to Linux and eventually released as open source for the OLPC XO Laptop. Later id products continued to be ported by David Kirsch and Timothee Besset, a practice that continued until the studio's acquisition by ZeniMax Media in 2009. Their game Quake was ported to Linux in 1996, once again by Dave D. id Software, the original developers of Doom, also continued to release their products for Linux. From there he would also help found the development studio Crack dot Com, which released the video game Abuse, with the game's Linux port even being published by Linux vendor Red Hat. Taylor ported the game Doom to Linux, as well as many other systems, during his spare time. ![]() The beginning of Linux as a gaming platform for commercial video games is widely credited to have begun in 1994 when Dave D. As the operating system itself grew and expanded, the amount of free and open-source games also increased in scale and complexity. Popular early titles included NetHack, Netrek, XBill, XEvil, xbattle, Xconq and XPilot. The free software and open source methodologies which spawned the development of the operating system in general also spawned the creation of various early free games. A notable example of this was the so-called " BSD Games", a collection of interactive fiction and other text-mode titles. ![]() These games were either mostly original or clones of arcade games and text adventures. Linux gaming started largely as an extension of the already present Unix gaming scene, with both systems sharing many similar titles. Doom was one of the first major commercial games to be released for Linux.

This is truly one of my all time favorite business stories. Richard Montanez is a truly inspirational figure and deserves all the success that comes his way. The snack that Katy Perry dressed up as for Halloween. The most popular snack in America according to AdWeek, goPuff, and anyone with an Instagram. He then stood in front of a group of executives at Frito-Lay and pitched the product that would go on to become Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. To make his pitch more serious, (and this is one of those parts of the story that is almost too awesome to be true) he rented a book on marketing from the library and memorized some phrases with the help of his wife, doodled his own product design on some plastic bags, and bought a $3 tie to wear to the meeting. It was inspired, mainly, by Mexican street corn seasoned with chili and lime. And Richard went off to invent a product that spoke to his Mexican heritage. He told Richard to take two weeks to prepare a presentation for himself and the other executives. The CEO, to his immense credit, took the call and took this humble janitor extremely seriously. Or at least that’s what you do when you are a confident and fearless janitor. Because that’s what you do as a janitor when you have an idea. So when Richard Montanez was struck with a brilliant idea, he knew just what to do. The video implored them to feel more like owners of the company and to take more responsibility for its successes and failures. One day during his tenure as janitor, the Frito-Lay CEO, Roger Enrico, recorded a video for all employees. ![]() Which one of these wallet cases has got more votes from you?
